Since 1995, I have set a goal each year for myself. It always revolves around a physical endeavor, and I don’t choose something small. I pick something that will make me have to get my butt up off the couch, or comfy read chair, and get me working out to train for it. I am deathly afraid of getting fat and flabby, so my goal helps me keep this from happening.
Over the years the goals have been Summiting Mt. Rainier (4 tries, no dice) summiting Mt. Adams (lousy guide and got stormed off) summiting Mt. Baker (made it!)
One year was a half marathon (success!)

And then any number of long bike rides. ALL successful!
So tonight, when my lovely bride took me to dinner, we started talking about next years goals. And we came up with a pretty ambitious thought….Back in 2008, I cycled from Astoria Oregon to Crescent City California (424 miles).
To date, that is my only bicycle tour. I’ve done two day supported rides (such as the Seattle to Portland or RSVP) but that’s it. I’ve been itchin to do another multi-day trip. I remember how free I felt, the sights I saw, the people I talked to. For a week, I had nowhere to be and nothing to worry about.
So I suggested I ride the Oregon coast again. With Michelle leapfrogging along so we could spend time together. Then we looked at each other, and almost in unison, we said “HEY! We could start in Crescent City, and head south from there!
This would take me not only to the trees of mystery, and Paul Bunyan
But also through the Redwoods and along a coast I have only seen once. And the one time I saw it, I was dealing with car sick kids! Off the top of our heads, we thought about going all the way to San Francisco, but I need to do some research on just how far that is.
I like this idea! She could still leapfrog me, we could have lunch and spend the nights together, but I would see some amazing things. I am thinking the week after Labor Day, so I would have to ride a lot before hand, maybe even try for the RAMROD again. But if I pull it off, I will be able to say I have ridden from Vancouver BC to San Francisco….
I better get some miles under these legs!
That sounds like so much fun!!! We are planning to do a bicycle tour next summer, too. It’ll be our first ever! I look forward to seeing your future posts about that. Enjoy 2013 while it lasts! 🙂
You as well! Where are you thinking of going?
We’re gonna start here and probably head to places like Galena, IL or Door County, WI. Eventually, wanna ride all the way up to Colorado! We don’t fly, so basically we need to get good at bike touring so we can travel to all kinds of places on a budget
That sounds like a lot of fun
