A bit too much Anise for my taste…

Michelle has worked hard over the years to raise my palate from the level of Cella Lambrusco to real wine.  We love going to Woodinville and going wine tasting.  And this year we traveled to the Mecca of wine in Washington State, Walla Walla!

We enjoy many different wines, all reds of course (white wines is for amateurs we say).  Dusted Valley, Ross Andrew, Otis Kenyon, William Church, and Alexandra Nicole to name a few.

However, being Seattle, we have many likes and dislikes.  We are the home of Starbucks (Love them!) But it has become very trendy to say “Oh I never go there! I prefer whosits coffee.”  Michelle and I heard that just today!

So wine, coffee, what else could there be to sample around here.  How bout root beer!

Yep, you heard me right, root beer! One day i was traveling north on Hwy 99 in Lynnwood, and saw this sign:

OK, Manchild and I HAD to check this out.  I am not a big soda fan, except for Diet Mtn Dew, but when I do have one, its root beer.  We go inside and sure enough:

imageRoot beers from all over the USA, also cream sodas,Sarsaparillas,  as well as many other choices.  Very cool!  But this is what we expecting to find.  What we didn’t expect was the people who shopped there.

Now when we go wine tasting, we sometimes run into the pompous and Know-it-all kind of people.  They aren’t there to taste and enjoy and talk with the folks running the tasting rooms.  They are there to try to decipher the taste.  Oak, tannins, fruit, tobacco, smoke etc.  It comes out sounding pretty damn pretentious sometimes.  (Ok maybe its just because I have three tastes:  YUM!, Eh!, or BLECK!)

But I expect this with wine.  Shoot I even expect this with coffee houses.  Nut I NEVER expected it from the root beer store.

There were debates going on over which were better, this was sweeter, this one too carbonated, this one you just didn’t get a true root beer, and yes, “That one just has too much anise for my taste!”  (I had to google anise when I got home!)

They have tastings the first Saturday of every month, you can get KEGS or root beer for parties.  People come from far and wide and spend hours choosing what they want!  Manchild and I just go in and pick 4 we never had before!

So yep, if you are ever in Seattle, you will be able to find many MANY different things to sample.  But PLEASE don’t lump us all into the same category as those you find at the root beer store!
