There is just something about May

In the past, I used to do a blog post at the end of each month called Racking up the miles. In it, I would recap the month of riding, the amount of miles I accomplished, the high and low points during the month, and share my favorite photos. Somewhere along the way I stopped doing this. Maybe one of these days I will start again.

Looking back though, over the history of this blog, more so than any other, May has always been an interesting month… Continue reading “There is just something about May”

Emerald City Bike Ride 2017

Anyone who reads this blog knows it doesn’t take much to get me to go ride a bike. In November, I take one non rainy (no matter how cold) day to ride my years for my birthday. I try to get out New Years day. Anytime the rains stop and the roads aren’t icy in the winter I am there. Today, there was only  ‘chance’ of thunder showers, so after work I was out for 37 miles… Yeah, you guessed it,  I was caught by a squall…

So nope, it doesn’t take much to get me riding. So when I am told they are shutting down 3 major highways and allowing only bikes to ride???  I am on it! That happened Sunday… Continue reading “Emerald City Bike Ride 2017”

Maybe it wasn’t my best idea…

Well folks, we’ve all heard that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Given that, it truly was with the best of intentions that I planned the outing today for Michelle and I. She has told me for the last couple of years that she wanted to go hiking, So, with a 4 day weekend coming here (we took today off from work!) I picked a trail for us to go…. HOLY CRAP! Spring finally showed up!

I was born, a long LONG time ago, in Boston. But as an army brat I moved around a lot. I DO like the Red Sox, and, until Tom Brady came on the scene, I liked the Patriots. Rarely, if ever, though, do I think of myself as a Bostonian. I have lived in the Pacific Northwest since Junior High, so as far as I am concerned, I am a Northwesterner!

This means, rain doesn’t normally bug me. Lord knows I have ridden in it enough!

This year has been nuts though! We have had more rain since October than EVER before. And, even I am tired of it! (Last week I was caught riding home in a thunderstorm)

So, when it was heard that today, A SATURDAY no less, was going to be in the 70s and sunny, plans had to be made! Continue reading “HOLY CRAP! Spring finally showed up!”

Reward for a Good Deed!

As you may or may not know, I am known in real life as Cold and Callous Valente. I try to hide out and keep to myself. I do fun raiser bike rides, and donate to others doing the same type of thing, but I don’t volunteer that often.

To make up for this, Michelle, my gorgeous wife,

has a HUGE heart and likes to help others. She also knows she can volunteer me as well, as I am always happy to help and be with her. This weekend was one of those times… Continue reading “Reward for a Good Deed!”

Where No One Has Gone Before

I know for a fact I am 52. I don’t feel like it and I sure as hell don’t act like it, but yep, I am 52. I was born in 1964….

Back then there were no interwebs, cell phones, or cable. We had 3 national channels, plus what ever local TV channels there were. Hell, when my dad was stationed in Germany, we had 1 (yep count em, just one) English-speaking channel. Oh the horror….

Like all kids, I LOVED cartoons. I remember Johnny Quest, Speed Buggy, and, of course Looney Tunes! They were only on Saturdays, but, each morning I would be there, in my jammies, watching them.

I am not sure how, but somehow,  during my formative years, I also developed a taste for science fiction shows. I distinctly remember watching The Time Tunnel, The Land of the Giants, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits and Lost in Space. Somehow before I knew what the word Nerd and Geek meant, I was the textbook example.

In addition to these shows listed above, there was one other. In my mind, the single show that helped me become who I am today. Star Trek…. Continue reading “Where No One Has Gone Before”

Wellllll OF COURSE I DID!!!

Without a doubt, if I picked a time of my life that had the most memories and effect on my memories or the things I say, it would be the years at WSU with Dave, Scott, Jim and I.

The Strohs Bros! I was NOT the tall one, and check out the wall paper

No matter how long its been, there are just times that a phrase, word or saying from these days just want to jump into current conversations. Today was one of those days… Continue reading “Wellllll OF COURSE I DID!!!”
