In the past, I used to do a blog post at the end of each month called Racking up the miles. In it, I would recap the month of riding, the amount of miles I accomplished, the high and low points during the month, and share my favorite photos. Somewhere along the way I stopped doing this. Maybe one of these days I will start again.
Anyone who reads this blog knows it doesn’t take much to get me to go ride a bike. In November, I take one non rainy (no matter how cold) day to ride my years for my birthday. I try to get out New Years day. Anytime the rains stop and the roads aren’t icy in the winter I am there. Today, there was only ‘chance’ of thunder showers, so after work I was out for 37 miles… Yeah, you guessed it, I was caught by a squall…
Well folks, we’ve all heard that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Given that, it truly was with the best of intentions that I planned the outing today for Michelle and I. She has told me for the last couple of years that she wanted to go hiking, So, with a 4 day weekend coming here (we took today off from work!) I picked a trail for us to go…. I was born, a long LONG time ago, in Boston. But as an army brat I moved around a lot. I DO like the Red Sox, and, until Tom Brady came on the scene, I liked the Patriots. Rarely, if ever, though, do I think of myself as a Bostonian. I have lived in the Pacific Northwest since Junior High, so as far as I am concerned, I am a Northwesterner!
This means, rain doesn’t normally bug me. Lord knows I have ridden in it enough!
This year has been nuts though! We have had more rain since October than EVER before. And, even I am tired of it! (Last week I was caught riding home in a thunderstorm)
As you may or may not know, I am known in real life as Cold and Callous Valente. I try to hide out and keep to myself. I do fun raiser bike rides, and donate to others doing the same type of thing, but I don’t volunteer that often.
I know for a fact I am 52. I don’t feel like it and I sure as hell don’t act like it, but yep, I am 52. I was born in 1964….
Back then there were no interwebs, cell phones, or cable. We had 3 national channels, plus what ever local TV channels there were. Hell, when my dad was stationed in Germany, we had 1 (yep count em, just one) English-speaking channel. Oh the horror….
Like all kids, I LOVED cartoons. I remember Johnny Quest, Speed Buggy, and, of course Looney Tunes! They were only on Saturdays, but, each morning I would be there, in my jammies, watching them.
I am not sure how, but somehow, during my formative years, I also developed a taste for science fiction shows. I distinctly remember watching The Time Tunnel, The Land of the Giants, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits and Lost in Space. Somehow before I knew what the word Nerd and Geek meant, I was the textbook example.
