First off, I only have one bike. Others think the correct number of bikes should be N + 1 (N of course equaling the number of bikes you have now, so you always need another (who says you will NEVER use algebra?))
Secondly, I never set an annual mileage goal. I know I will ride whenever I can, including commuting to and from work, regular exercise rides, as well as some longer more adventurous ones. At the end of the year I will add up the miles and see what I did.
Back in 1980, Mt St Helens blew and blew big. This caused disruptions to many people in the state of Washington, as you might expect. One such disruption, was the cancellation of the Seattle to Portland ride. Roads were gone, or flooded, or buried in ash, or all three… NOT conducive to riding.

Going strictly on my won/loss record (or summit/no summit) I was a dismal 2 and 6 over 12 years, with the only real summits reached being Mt Baker and Mt St Helens.
Starting in 2008, the challenge shifted to 2 wheels instead of plastic boots, and roadways instead of glaciers. In the last 7 years and 20000 miles I have yet not to succeed. Yep, undefeated. This week will put that record to the test… Continue reading “The Time is Nigh….”→
I realized something today as I was working getting ready to teach 3 upcoming classes (which, could ALL start on the same day. No pressure though….). Since my wife and I are going out to dinner for our 4th wedding anniversary (Can you believe it? 4 years and she still likes me! (Love you babe!)) I rode the bike into work today.
The ride itself was uneventful. No rain, not overly cold, no family of raccoons on the side of the path or mudslide trying to take me out clean. However, this is the start of my second year as a bike commuter! Continue reading “Year Two!”→
