Where No One Has Gone Before

I know for a fact I am 52. I don’t feel like it and I sure as hell don’t act like it, but yep, I am 52. I was born in 1964….

Back then there were no interwebs, cell phones, or cable. We had 3 national channels, plus what ever local TV channels there were. Hell, when my dad was stationed in Germany, we had 1 (yep count em, just one) English-speaking channel. Oh the horror….

Like all kids, I LOVED cartoons. I remember Johnny Quest, Speed Buggy, and, of course Looney Tunes! They were only on Saturdays, but, each morning I would be there, in my jammies, watching them.

I am not sure how, but somehow,  during my formative years, I also developed a taste for science fiction shows. I distinctly remember watching The Time Tunnel, The Land of the Giants, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits and Lost in Space. Somehow before I knew what the word Nerd and Geek meant, I was the textbook example.

In addition to these shows listed above, there was one other. In my mind, the single show that helped me become who I am today. Star Trek…. Continue reading “Where No One Has Gone Before”

Trail Magic

You know, I wasn’t going to do a post today, I have other things to do, and even though it was a fun ride tonight (I snuck in 50 miles) up and until mile 49, nothing blogworthy had occurred. Who knew that last mile would make a difference! So blog I will, but just a short one!

I was stopped at the last stop light before my house. I was first in line right at the cross walk. I looked to the left and this 14 or 15-year-old girl was walking across the intersection to my side, and would pass right in front of me. She was munching cookies from a package she bought at the corner store.

I smiled at her, as I do everyone I make eye contact with when I ride and she smiled back. Now remember, I did 49 miles after riding 18 this morning. I probably looked pretty darn tired, and who knows, maybe even hungry.

As she reached me in the intersection she smiles and says, “Would you like a cookie?”

Ok, somewhere out there is a cyclist who doesn’t like cookies. That aint me! “Yes I would!” I replied, “Thank you!”

She handed me a cookie, hit the sidewalk my side of the intersection, then turned her head and said, “Have a nice ride!” and she walked and munched down the road!

Ladies and gents, we call this trail magic. It’s when a complete stranger does you a kindness of some type completely out of the blue, and without ever being asked. Thinking back I can only remember a couple of other times this has happened.

We all know there is a lot of crap wrong in the world, and who knows if it will ever get fixed. But knowing people like this teenager are willing to share her cookies with a scungy looking cyclist tells me it aint all bad! And it still puts a smile on face!

Book Review: Old Man on a Bicycle By Don Petterson

Long time readers of the Mountainstroh blog know I have one fear: Getting Old.  I am honestly scared to death of being old, decrepit, and being barely able to walk to the mailbox.  That, plus a guy I saw once in Disneyland (another post for another day) are why I bust my ass and work out so much.

Don, an ex US Ambassador, though, gives me, and those like me approaching, ok well into, middle age hope! Why, because at 71, this man decided, “What the hell!  I am going to ride across the United States!”… Continue reading “Book Review: Old Man on a Bicycle By Don Petterson”
