Who did I meet on my beach walk tonight?

Hi Y’all!

So two years ago, when we first moved here, May hit and I swear it didn’t rain all month! We, here at the coast, were in a drought. Outdoor fires, even on the beach were soon banned and it was dry as a tater chip!

This year? Not so much! Its been raining off and on for the last couple of weeks. Today, I did a beach walk, 6.5 miles from the car at Gleneden Beach to Siletz Bay and back. It was dry when I got there, but it didn’t stay that way long!

But hey, I am a coast kid. If I gave up evey time a little rain fell, I’d never leave the house! Given what I ended up seeing, I am VERY glad I kept going… Continue reading “Who did I meet on my beach walk tonight?”

Seriously a 2 mile climb with a headwind???

One of the accounts I follow on Instagram is for a French Fry Mooching seagull affectionately known as FathomsBarBuddy.

He hangs out on the ledge at Fathoms Bar, up on the 10th floor of the Inn at Spanish Head

He has some  pearls of wisdom that come from his feathered head and orange beak. (If you are an instagram user just search Fathomsbarbuddy, all one word.)

One of his tidbits is to “Never waste a winter day when the rains stop!”

Folks, let me tell you, as I type this, our rain gage says we have 15.36 inches of rain since January 1! Our average for January is only 10.4″  (thanks Alexa!) we are well above average and its windy and rainy this evening.

So when there was an unexpected break in the weather this morning, I saddled up! Continue reading “Seriously a 2 mile climb with a headwind???”

A short window of opportunity!

When I am at work and talking with other insurance companies, quite often I get asked by the big national insurance companies where the Mighty P, the company I work for, is based out of. Almost invariably, when I say Seattle, I hear. “Does it REALLy rain there all the time?”

I of course say YES IT DOES! We want people to think it looks like this

We try not to let people know that a lot of the time the Northwest really  looks like this!

If keeps down the crowds you know.

However, for as much as it does rain in Seattle, the Oregon Coast gets even more. Which makes it challenging to to be a cyclist here… Continue reading “A short window of opportunity!”

Reach the Beach 2019

Well folks, for me May means two things these last few years. The first is Bike everywhere month. Once again, even though I moved to the Oregon Coast, I was the captain of the team for the Mighty P!  This Friday last, was bike to work day. Well when you work at home there is no commute. Michelle knows me well, though, and convinced me to saddle up for a ride around the block. Here I am, sporting game face, flip flops and cargo shorts coming into the ‘office’.

Now I did catch some grief for no helmet! Rest assured, any ride where I lose sight of my own garage I ALWAYS wear a helmet!

The other thing that occurs in May is the Reach the Beach ride.

An Unexpected Morning Off

I have been sharing the weather we’ve been having over the last week or so. After a November of dry and sun, Mother Nature is making up for taking it easy on us earlier in the season.

This morning was no exception…..

A drive to remember

As we all know, the reason Michelle and I were able to move here to the coast is because the Mighty P let us telecommute from here. My normal work attire now is shorts, t-shirt and no shoes or sock.

However, the expectation when we moved here was that we would need to come back from time to time and work in the office. This week was a whirlwind trip for me. The drive up was uneventful, and the time in the office productive. My boss also convinced me to finally let him take me out for my 5th anniversary lunch. (My second 5th anniversary.)

We went to Red Robin! YUM!!!

But it was the drive home, that will be remembered. Continue reading “A drive to remember”

Tour de Blast 2018

OK before I recap the ride I need to address a couple of things! If you are a rider reading this before the 2019 or beyond ride remember 2 things!

1) Do NOT believe the weather forecast!!! Make sure to have rain gear in the car with you just in case!!

2) This route EATS tires! Have plenty of extra tubes, patch kits, pump and CO2 with you! Also your toughest tires!!

OK, so lets talk about the ride… Continue reading “Tour de Blast 2018”

Even the cows thought I was nuts!

So this weekend, we had a change of scenery. For the last 2 years these three hotties met in Corvallis to do the Half Marathon.

Now it will come as no surprise that a half marathon is HARD! My job is to leap-frog the, with the bike with extra liquids, take extra layers if needed, and be the personal support crew. (Not a bad gig as all 🙂

After last year, the three decided “HEY, let’s do the 5 K instead! Then Mark and Tony can participate! And we did!! The 5 K post will most likely be tomorrow though, as there was a lot unpacked in a 1.5 days. And my brain is a bit fuzzy right now, So I will hold off to do justice to this.

What we will discuss today is the reason for the brain fuzz. I took the opportunity to ride the bike home from Corvallis!  Continue reading “Even the cows thought I was nuts!”
