I frequently refer to 2015 as the “Year without a winter.” Throughout the beginning of the year, we were unseasonably warm and dry. Riding last year was a pleasure for a cyclist, even if the state paid for it with drought conditions all spring and summer long.
I can now see I got a bit spoiled in 2015. So far, 2016 has been MUCH different (meaning more normal) and I have had to relearn my winter riding… Continue reading “Winter Riding Comfort”
Last week, if you remember, I woke up, got geared for the ride, opened the door and saw…. GULLYWASHER! I did an about-face, shucked the riding gear and drove in with Michelle to work. Sometimes, it is just OK to decide this is not a good day to ride.
That night, I rode on the rollers in the shed, and cranked out 20 miles (my inside riding distance record) which made up for not riding that morning.
The cycling gods were pleased, however, the weather gods might have been a little perturbed at me…. Continue reading “The Weather Gods Suckered Me!”
As I type this, it is a wet cold day outside here in the Northwest. I have a fire started in the wood burning stove, the Manchild is on the couch wrapped in a big blankie, and on Facebook I see people counting down to the start of summer.
A couple of weeks ago, I was reading a post from a Drawbridge Keeper here in Seattle Titled Beauty in the Gray. I’ve been meaning to do my own post on the subject ever since. Yep, it can be gray and dismal here this time of year. But if you pay attention, and look around you, this time of year is amazing, and in fact, sometimes more spectacular than summer! Ok I know., When it comes to the weather I have been a complainer lately. “It’s too hot!” “I’m Melting! “I’m tired of 80 degrees!” Yep, Broken Record Valente they call me! I have no idea how I would survive where it REALLY got hot.
Today though, was different…. Continue reading “Feels like fall!”
Yes it’s that time again, even though the rest of the country is deals with much worse heat, we, here in Seattle, have been experiencing upper 80s and low 90s all summer. Many of you would kill for temps like this, it would be a relief.
But for me, I just don’t do well in heat. And in all honesty, I would rather ride in 45 degrees than 85. Cold is just so much easier to deal with. Continue reading “Too hot vs. Too cold”
I am a pretty good dad. We have two boys, the Math Major is now 20 and the Manchild is 15. Both of them are smarter than hell, and they and I get along better than my dad and I did. One measure is the visiting. When my folks split up, I liked being in my own room, so visiting my Dad wasn’t that big a deal. Our boys came up every weekend, unless school got in the way.
However, since they were knee-high to a grasshopper, there is one time I scare them and they really don’t want to be around me. Continue reading “Scaring the Children”
OK, it is still August. So maybe it’s not coming tomorrow. In fact Washington State (at least Western Wa where I live) is having a record-breaking heat wave right now. What? It hasn’t made the news where you are? How hot has it been you ask? Are there heat alerts? Cooling stations set up? Have the train tracks warped?
Well it’s not really that kind of heat wave. Continue reading “Winter is Coming”
